The GPSTC - Athens conducts a 408-hr. Basic Law Enforcement Training Course, Basic Jailor Training on and off campus, various Advanced and Specialized Training Courses also conducted on and off campus, and In-Service Training.

On July 11, 2011 the address for GPSTC - Athens was changed from 55 Beaverdam Road Ext to 155 Buddy Christian Way to honor Athens-Clarke County Officer Buddy Christian who was killed in the line of duty this year.

Directions to GPSTC - Athens

When approaching Athens, get on to the US 29 Loop around Athens. Since the loop encircles Athens either direction will bring you back to your entry point. When you arrive at Exit #8 - (Lexington Hwy US 78 East), exit the loop. At the bottom of the off ramp turn away from Athens (in either case that will be to your right). Travel down Lexington Hwy -.(US 78 East) till you reach a Lowes' Home Improvement Center on your left. At that intersection turn left onto Cherokee Road. Go to the next traffic light (about I mile) then take a left on to Buddy Christian Way. Then building will be the first structure on the right. A brick and granite sign is placed in front of the building, near the road, designating GPSTC - ATHENS. Park in any un-marked parking space and enter the building in the rear (just follow the signs).

Note:
NO weapons or cell phones/PDA's are allowed inside the building. Make sure you secure these items in your vehicle before you enter the building.

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Shoes/Boots - Black, must be shined leather, not cloth.
  2. Polo Academy Shirt* - Navy Blue with academy logo. (see below)
  3. T-Shirt* - Navy Blue with academy logo. (see below)
  4. Pants - Khaki color (5.11 Tactical cotton preferred) with black belt
  5. Hat* - Baseball type navy with academy logo. (see below)
  6. Shorts* - Gray. (see below)
  7. Athletic shoes - Recommended (cross training, running, or tennis)
  8. Duty/Utility belt (Leather or Nylon)
  9. Holster - (Leather or Nylon, Security Level 2 Minimum)
  10. Pistol with three magazines and mag pouch (.40, .45. or 9mm calibers, check with the academy staff if in doubt) Pre-service candidates must have pistol approved prior to 1st day of class. If available, pre-service student may borrow an academy pistol.
  11. Weapon cleaning supplies. (recommended)
  12. Flashlight with batteries and Flashlight Holder/Ring.
  13. Standard handcuffs with keys and handcuff belt case. (no corrections high security cuffs)
  14. Expandable baton and baton holster
  15. Ballistic Protective Vest. (if issued by your department)
  16. Extra Clothing available in case of bad weather. (khaki colored pants only)
  17. Training pistols will be issued to all students by the academy. If a student is using a non-standard pistol, the student will be responsible for supplying the training pistol. (i.e. 1911)
  18. A good dictionary i.e. American Heritage, etc. (recommended)
  19. The Peace Officers Reference Text (PORT) is available for purchase for $40 + 7% tax ($2.80) = $42.80. Payment must be made with a money order, personal check or a department/city/county check** payable to Georgia Public Safety Training Center. Students or departments are strongly encouraged to purchase a PORT since students are not allowed to write or highlight in the issued PORT. Doing so will require purchase.

*Every student is required to purchase a minimum of three (3) academy logo polo shirts, one (1) academy logo T-Shirt, one (1) baseball hat with logo, and one (1) pair of shorts, with the academy logo, prior to the first day of class. In order to streamline the process and offer the items at the lowest possible cost arrangements have been made for students/agencies to deal directly with the vendor.
