Biography

 

Steve Barnhart began serving as supervisor of the Athens and Columbia County Regional Police Academies in 2016, a position supported by 19 years of specialized and advanced training program delivery and a cumulative experience of 29 years in law enforcement and 15 years in fire service.

Barnhart gained experience in communications, patrol and undercover drug enforcement operations from 1988 through 2000. He was first employed as a full-time instructor by the Georgia Police Academy (2000-02) in the narcotics training section. Barnhart transferred to Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) and served as the POST Investigator for Northeast Georgia (2002-04). Barnhart rejoined the staff of the Georgia Police Academy, serving as the primary instructor for legal courses involving statutory and appellate law, and additional instruction in multiple drug enforcement and counter-terrorism programs. Barnhart is a Pro Board certified firefighter NPQ FF2 (2002), and Hazardous Materials Technician (2006). He has served as a volunteer firefighter since 2002 for Oconee County Fire – Rescue in Watkinsville, GA.

Barnhart has fully authored or significantly expanded over a dozen courses provided by GPSTC and continues to provide classroom and scenario-based training to federal, state and local officers across Georgia and surrounding states.
