Larry Mooney has been in law enforcement for over 25 years. Larry began his career in law enforcement with the Butts County Sheriff’s Office in 1992 as a detention officer for the late William O. (Billy) Leverett, Sheriff. He was employed there for a total of eighteen years. During that time he served in many different capacities throughout the agency. Some of those assignments include being one of the first members of the Traffic Enforcement Unit. He also served as a K-9 handler and was a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team. In 1997 Larry was assigned to the D.A.R.E. unit where he was tasked with building the program from the ground up. During his tenure as D.A.R.E. Officer he taught hundreds of children the dangers of drug use and violence. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2002 and was assigned as a night shift supervisor in the patrol division. Soon after that promotion Larry was certified as a Drug Recognition Expert through I.A.C.P. While assigned to the patrol division, Larry was responsible for hundreds of DUI arrests, both alcohol and drug related. In April of 2006 Larry was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and served as the assistant patrol commander for the sheriff’s office. In February 2008, Larry joined the training staff at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center as a Staff Instructor with the Georgia Police Academy. Since that time he has trained hundreds of law enforcement officers DUI detection.

On November 29, 2010 Larry re-joined the Butts County Sheriff’s Office as the chief deputy for Sheriff Gene Pope (Ret.), holding the rank of colonel. He served in that capacity for more than two years. On January 1, 2013 Larry was sworn in with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office as the patrol commander, holding the rank of captain. He served in that position for six months before returning to the Georgia Public Safety Training Center as the Field Sobriety Coordinator for the state of Georgia on July 1, 2013.

In addition to training law enforcement from all over Georgia, Larry has trained officers from the states of Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana. He has taken part in SFST and ARIDE training with the Florida Highway Patrol and other county and municipal agencies throughout Florida.

In May of 2017 Larry was assigned as the Drug Recognition Expert Coordinator for the state of Georgia. The 47th DRE School was the first as the new coordinator.
