Billy Shoemaker began his career at GPSTC as a full time law enforcement instructor with the Georgia Police Academy (GPA) Physical Training Section in March 2017. Prior to joining the GPSTC staff, Shoemaker worked with the Atlanta Fire Department retiring with 30 years of service. He served on Atlanta’s Specialized unit SQUAD 5 where he functioned on the Hazardous Materials Team and the Tactical High Rise Rope Rescue Team as well as being a Paramedic. He held the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain, and Battalion Chief. In 1996 he was chosen to serve as the Commander of the Olympic Village for the Atlanta Fire Department and was task with protecting the “World’s Top Athletes”. In addition to fire related duties, Shoemaker was assigned to the Atlanta Police SWAT team as a Tactical Medic and later retiring in 2011 as a Battalion Chief with the City of Atlanta.

While serving with Atlanta Fire, he also worked with the Union City Police Department assigned to Special Operations. As a Sergeant, he was the Team Leader of a highly motivated, aggressive SWAT Team. He also functioned as an Explosive Breacher where he was directly tasked with High Risk Warrant, Barricaded Suspects and Hostage situations; along with executing the department’s narcotics and search warrants, The SWAT Team was often called in to assist other agencies with their tactical operations. Shoemaker also supervised the Crime Suppression Team (ACE) which was task with Gangs, Drugs, and Fugitives. Throughout his career at Union City Police Department he functioned as the department Training Coordinator.

He was one of the lead Instructors for the Basic SWAT School sponsored by the Union City Police / Fulton County Training Academy. In 2017, after 22 years of service with Union City Police Department he began his 2nd retirement retiring as a Lieutenant. Throughout his career he instructed at several regional academies and agencies, as well as GPSTC as an adjunct Instructor. He has been the Guest of Honor / speaker at several Boy Scouts of America Banquets due to being a former Eagle Scout.
