The Family Violence curriculum consists of the Family Violence First Responder and Family Violence Investigations courses. Multiple offerings of each course are available throughout the year. Please note that these courses replace the Law Enforcement’s Response to Domestic Violence course previously offered.
The Family Violence First Responder is an advanced course. This course is offered through the Governor’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and is in compliance with Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A) 17-4-20. Family Violence First Responder is designed for law enforcement training in the investigation of family violence incidents. Skills and knowledge necessary to enforce O.C.G.A 19-13-1 in a safe and legal manner will be taught. Students will explore Dynamics of Abuse, Victimology, Abuser Behavior, Current Data on Family Violence Trends in Georgia, Misdemeanor and Felony Offenses, and Data from Current Georgia Fatality Review Project.

The Family Violence Investigations course will go into more detail than Family Violence First Responder. Therefore, to include more details, this course will be 40 hours long. Offered through the Governor’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC), this course is designed for law enforcement training in the investigation of family violence incidents in compliance with O.C.G.A 17-4-20, O.C.G.A. 19-31-1, and O.C.G.A. 16-5-20. Topics during Family Violence Investigations will include training on neurobiology of the brain with regard to the impact on victim behavior, investigation, and interviewing. Students will gain the skills to investigate domestic homicide cases using the continuum of violence scale and family violence dynamics principle.
