Instructors in the Instructional Services Division teach and coordinate GPSTC’s online training, instructor training, and basic communications officer training. This is a group of highly trained education specialists; showing mastery in their field of study. In addition to their regular instruction, they often assist other instructors with curriculum development and research.

Sonya Jackson

Sonya Jackson began her career in public safety communication in 1996 as a front line Communications Officer. In 1998 she took on the responsibilities of being a Communications Training Officer. It was her continued dedication to public safety that resulted in her becoming a Shift Supervisor. She spent 13 years as a Shift Supervisor at a metropolitan Atlanta 911 center before coming to GPSTC. Jackson currently serves as the communications training coordinator in GPSTC’s Instructional Services Division.

Jackson is certified by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Councils as a General Instructor. She currently serves as an active member of the Georgia Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) and actively sits on the training committee. She is also a current member of the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) and served as the Georgia chapter secretary 2002 – 2004. Sonya has lectured at numerous state conferences including the Georgia Emergency Communications Conference.

In 2015, Jackson joined the staff of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center’s Instructional Services Division to pursue her continued passion of instructing and public safety communications.

Jackson is a lifelong resident of the state of Georgia. She and her husband, Russell, have three grown children, Patricia, Samantha and Russell. They are also the proud grandparents of Marcus, Michael, Jacob, Jadahlyn, and Jason. Sonya enjoys music, traveling, and spending precious time with her family.
