Traffic Section

The Traffic Section develops and delivers training courses related to traffic law, speed enforcement techniques, DUI apprehension, and crash investigations. The unit conducts entry-level courses such as Radar Operator, Lidar Speed Measurement and Advanced Traffic Law. Additionally, the section delivers robust course offerings in the specialized areas of: DUI, Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Traffic Crash Investigation and Reconstruction, and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) certification.

Section Highlights

Traffic Accident Reconstruction Specialist Certification

The Traffic Accident Reconstruction Specialist certification program qualifies successful student to become POST certified accident reconstruction specialists. The program consists of two on-scene level courses that teach investigation, evidence collection and documentation techniques as well as basic speed loss mathematics. Using seven mock crash scenes, students measure and reproduce scale maps of a variety of intersections and crash scenarios. After mastering these basics, students  attend five sequential accident reconstruction classes, each focusing on different methods of determining speed, such as critical speed scuffs up to energy from crush damage. Total Station and other electronic measuring methods as well as training in Crash Zone software opportunities are also available.

Drug Recognition Expert Certification

Students who attend GPSTC’s internationally recognized DRE school complete a vigorous and extensive two-week series of classes under the tutelage of top DRE Instructors from across the state. After completing classroom training, these students conduct field evaluations on subjects who are suspected of being under the influence of drugs. This real world training is a unique opportunity that provides experience unlike any other drug recognition training course in Georgia. Students who complete this training receive certification as Drug Recognition Experts though the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

DUI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing

GPSTC’s three-day DUI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course teaches detection and documentation techniques and uses a live alcohol workshop to give students first-hand, practical experience under the guidance of an instructor in a controlled environment.
